Need To Take The NYC SST Training For New Entrants

 The construction industry is booming in all urban areas across the world. Unfortunately, the incidence of mishaps from construction sites also remains high. New York City and its surroundings are an area that has construction work going on at multiple sites simultaneously. Taking the NYC SST training for new entrants is a requirement that cannot be ignored by employers, managers, and supervisors overseeing tasks by both new and experienced workers at their sites.

Any worker who has joined the workforce in New York City and its vicinity after 2019 is mandated to comply with the training courses recommended by the NYC Department of Buildings as a new entrant to the construction industry in and around NYC. The training course includes the OSHA-recommended 10-Hour Construction course plus an additional 30 hours of Site Safety Training (SST). This involves the new entrant completing a total of 40 hours of training.  This qualifies the concerned student to get an SST card speedily. Otherwise, they have to earn a temporary SST card that allows them to work for 6 months at the site. Such workers are then deemed to be eligible to apply for a permanent SST card.

The NYC SST training is a workers' safety program mandated by the New York City Department of Buildings. It is a Local Law 196 applicable to new construction workers in New York City. Out-of-city workers arriving from New Jersey, Connecticut, and other surrounding areas are also expected to undergo this training course.

The purpose of the city administration is to ensure the safety of workers at the NYC construction sites. The training course is designed according to OSHA recommendations and includes identification and protection measures from all site-related hazards, electrical safety, along fall protection.

Each worker receives an NYC SST card on successful completion of the program. This card is an essential document for obtaining work across construction sites located in New York City.

There are no prerequisites for taking the training course. The new entrant workers must understand and speak English. The trainer will issue the SST card, or it can be downloaded online by the student who completes the training by scoring at least 75% in the final exam. A valid ID card must be submitted for verification before obtaining the SST card.

All NYC construction and demolition workers carrying a valid SST card need to go through the NYC SST 8-hour refresher training course every 5 years.
