Purpose of NYC SST Training
Using heavy equipment is commonplace in various construction sites, machine rooms, mining, forestry, and other areas. Unfortunately, handling hefty equipment during the operation may result in mishaps resulting in physical injury, disability, or death. The operator alone is not at risk, though. People working at the same site, as well as bystanders or passersby, are at equal risk. It is necessary for such workers and supervisors to take the proper OSHA-recommended heavy equipment operator training and obtain the certification. Many industries only recruit individuals with the necessary skills and safety training certification.
Sure, spending a few hours on the training may become impossible for people already working at such sites. OSHA has introduced and approved online training schedules, with the concerned operator free to take the entire training online from the privacy of home. What’s more? The training may be taken over weekends, thus solving the problem of losing work days.
Heavy equipment is used by multiple types of workers, with each operator being prone to specific types of risks. OSHA offers varied training courses, with the modules being designed according to the necessity. It is the responsibility of the worker and the employer to choose the right types of training from the following types of courses offered by OSHA-approved centers:
Forklift training is varied with the specific type of operator includes:
· Sit-down forklift training
· Stand-up forklift training
Skid steer operator safety training is meant to be taken by operators who have to maneuver the vehicle carefully into narrow, hard-to-reach areas.
Skid steer certification is obtained by printing out the certificate after completing the test by scoring at least 70%. It may be submitted to the employer/supervisor as proof of having taken the safety training.
OSHA rigging training & Crane rigging signalman–the operator helps the student to learn the hand signals perfectly to ensure proper rig loading with a crane or any other suitable heavy machinery.
Vehicle-mounted lift (Aerial Lift, Scissor Lift, Boom Lift, & Bucket Truck) Operator Training includes properly identifying the tools needed to scale heights and understanding how to use them skillfully by overcoming the risks. The safety training is diverse for workers using boom and scissor lifts as well as those using vehicle-mounted lifts.
Dump Truck operator training is meant for workers who drive dump trucks to deliver materials to the construction site or haul away such materials. The training involves safety practices, and a certificate and wallet card are made accessible after the successful completion of the training.
Front-end loader training—The course's purpose is to enable the driver to drive the front loader or bucket loader successfully by evading all risks. The classroom portion of the training may be taken online, and the certificate needs to be submitted to the supervisor to go through the mandatory practical aspects as well.
Backhoe loader training also consists of two parts: a classroom/online section & a practical one.
Bulldozer training includes both online and offline practical observation by the supervisor.
OSHA excavation training is not offered online, and the students are required to attend physical classes before taking the test.
It is customary for construction workers in the five NYC boroughs to undergo additional safety training, such as NYC SST training to qualify.
